L’innovation frugale peut-elle être un levier de croissance économique pour les pays en développement ?

Abstract:
The economic analysis sees technological innovation as the engine of growth. The now abundant literature on frugal innovation only marginally addresses the question of whether this type of innovation can be a determinant of growth in developing countries and in African economies in particular. In this paper, we deal with this relatively unexplored question through three components: 1) the assessment that we draw from recent experiences of high growth does not highlight an effect of frugal innovation in Africa, 2) an overview of research on the relationship between innovation and growth in African economies tends to show the existence of innovative market push and low-cost entrepreneurship without evaluating its impact on growth, 3) we identify and question the very recent critical literature on the promises of frugal innovation.
