Abstract:
If trust expresses the willingness of one party to be vulnerable to the actions of another, diversification strategies designed to reduce vulnerabilities may paradoxically weaken trust. We test this hypothesis with regard to market garden agriculture in Martinique. Interviews with seventeen actors in the agri-food sector and a survey of 203 producers were carried out in 2022. Our results reveal productive, commercial, collective, formal, and particularly informal diversification strategies. In the absence of formal contracts, trust at the individual and organizational levels is weakened.
