Sismondi et la question du progrès

Lucien Gillard

Revue économique, 2011, vol. 62, issue 2, 163-185

Abstract: Restive to the passion for the industrial revolution, Sismondi pleads in favor of reason. We ought first to see how one technical shock disturbs the process of an equilibrium model of growth, he said. And we also ought to appreciate how the costs and benefits of new machines divide between the social classes. Not only splitting up, as usual, wealth and happiness, Sismondi?s economic works open the way to such technical inquieries as ?neutrality of progress? and ?welfare economics?.
