Abstract: This article uses the abolition of the conscription in France in order to evaluate the effect of military service on different aspects of the labour market insertion of young men. Two original aspects are specifically analysed: the heterogeneity of the treatment effect according to the education level and the impact of military service on the cumulative employment duration. The results show a high degree of heterogeneity in the return to conscription. The wage returns are positive for the young people without qualifications and for high school graduates but not significant for other educational levels. These positive returns are explained by the limited impact of military service on labour market experience and by a positive impact on the starting wages. Classification JEL : J22, J24, J31
