From Patents to Stock Buffering Schemes. The Historical Evolution of the International Aluminium Cartels (1886–1945)

Abstract: International aluminium industry was deeply marked by cartels. Since its birth at the end of 19th century, a continuous series of cartel agreement were formed this industry until the Second World War. While the conventional interpretations consider cartels only from the standpoint of competition, this article aims to explore the managerial and organisational issues behind cartels, studying the evolution of their internal structures. The industrial regulation was the core of the activity of cartels for almost 50 years; however its legitimacy was questioned during 1930s by the state interventionism. From a layer of international regulation provided by the cartels, this industry shifted toward a national regulatory polity focused on strategic issues.
