Abstract:
Based on lab experiment, this study compares the level of prevention effort made by participants to reduce the risk probability, between the situation where they have previously chosen an insurance contract from a menu; and the situation where the insurance contract was imposed. The experimental evidence reveals a negative impact of introducing choice option in insurance on policyholders? preventive behaviors. In addition to the negative effect of the coverage rate on preventive effort (i.e. moral hazard effect), giving participants the choice of insurance contract reduces the level of preventive effort that they make afterwards, for a given coverage level.
