Abstract: The article highlights the importance of a series of conferences organized by Robert Triffin after the European Monetary System came into force in 1979. On the one hand, we can observe the emergence of an influential network of economists of which some members will play an important role in the preliminary negotiations of the Maastricht Treaty. On the other hand, the pragmatic approach which dominates these debates allows for the consolidation of an economic consensus which aims primarily for political ?feasibility? rather than for scientific rigour. As these economists are willing to support political ideas of which they are not convinced from an economic point of view, their consensus can even be ?schizophrenic,? as Triffin puts it.
