Abstract:
?This article studies the impact of the Reference Rate (RR), coupled with the generic entry, on originator and generic medicines? prices in Algeria. For each selected drug, we identified the annual Algerian Retail Price (ARP), the number of generic medicines and if the drug is subject to the RR or not. Then, our contribution takes place in the form of an econometric modeling from panel data for the period 2006 to 2011. We show that the introduction of RR induced a reduction of 9 % of the prices of brand name drug without having a direct impact on the prices of generics. However, the number of competing generics causes only a slight decrease in the price of generic of 1,4 %, while its impact is neutral on originator?s prices. These results suggest that the Algerian policy of promoting generic usage had relatively modest effects compared to other experiences over the World.?
