Abstract:
In the past, qualitative research has stressed the importance of mentoring in developing novices? self-efficacy. Furthermore, learning goal orientation was identified as an individual disposition influencing positively the development of self-efficacy. This study proposes to investigate whether self-efficacy can be developed in novice entrepreneurs when they are paired with a mentor who takes into account learning goal orientation. We have interrogated 360 mentored entrepreneurs from a mentoring network part of the « Fondation de l?entrepreneurship ». Using a structural equation modeling, it appeared that three subscales of entrepreneurial self-efficacy are developed through mentoring. Mentees? learning goal orientation influences both the development of self-efficacy and the level of mentoring received. These results confirm that the mentor influences this affective dimension in the novice entrepreneur and leads us to believe that learning goal orientation could play a significant role in entrepreneurs? career path.
