What stories are told from a family business and when?

Anders W. Johansson, Shang-Jen Li and Dun-Hou Tsai

Revue de l'Entrepreneuriat, 2014, vol. 13, issue 3, 171-186

Abstract: Narrative approaches have been used sparsely in family business research, even though they have the potential to provide empirical data that is difficult to access by other methods. This paper illustrates and analyzes the use of stories as an ongoing process within a Chinese family firm, bringing in the time dimension to explain what stories are told and when. The paper further illustrates that what stories are told changes over time in that those which were not told at the beginning of a research process come to the surface in later phases. Longitudinal storytelling is therefore argued to have the potential to contribute to rich explanations of family business experiences.
