Abstract:
This research examines the effects of affective, continuance and normative commitment on intentions to remain an entrepreneur. We import Meyer, Allen and Smith?s (1993) concept of occupational commitment into the field of entrepreneurship. Our data draws on the responses of 315 entrepreneurs, members of the two main French professional syndicates. Our results regarding the measurement model confirm that the three components of occupational commitment apply to entrepreneurs. Our structural equation model shows that affective and continuance commitment have distinct and potentially additional effects, while normative commitment has no significant effect. We discuss the contribution of our results for research on the psychology of entrepreneurs.
