Abstract:
Although previous work has highlighted the owner’s preponderant place in the craft company, to date the tensions that the craftsperson may feel between his/her role as producer and manager have not been investigated. We draw on identity theory to explore this issue. Based on 74 semi-structured interviews, we find that craftspeople experience identity conflicts which are sometimes difficult to overcome. We identify strategies to resolve these tensions: rejection of the entrepreneurial identity; identity change; and customisation of the business according to the craftsperson’s values and personal identity.
