L’avenir de la Social Security aux États-Unis

Peter Diamond

Revue de l'OFCE, 2020, vol. N° 170, issue 6, 15-57

Abstract: US Social Security is facing a medium-term risk of insolvency. This article reviews the political difficulties experienced since 1970 in adopting long-term bipartisan legislation. In particular, it examines the 1983 reform, which ensured the financing of pensions for almost half a century. The prospect that the Trust Fund will run dry in 2034 is once again raising the risk of insolvency. A review of recent and past institutional history in the United States, together with an analysis of foreign experience, shed light on the current debate and provide an overview of possible solutions to secure the long-term future of the US social security system.
