L'« histoire oubliée »: aux origines classiques de l'analyse marshallienne de l'organisation industrielle

Abstract: The marshallian approach of industrial organization is considered by many economists as the beginning of a huge literature that focuses, today, on the renewal of regional economics within the world. This paper aims to follow Professor?s BECATTINI pioneer work on MARSHALL writings. The later must be apprehended within a whole theoretical framework that appears in the history of economic thought of the nineteenth century, leading from SMITH to MILL and CAIRNES and finally to MARSHALL, and representing an alternative to RICARDO?s general theory. This theoretical framework admits the possibility of productive organization on the basis of non-perfect competition. The most representative case of such an organization is the non competing group, archetype of the industrial district. Classification JEL : B12, L16, R11, R12.
