Conflits armés, inégalités et pauvreté: quelles interactions dans la région nord du Niger ?

Revue d'économie régionale et urbaine, 2011, vol. décembre, issue 5, 831-848

Abstract: The armed conflicts of Northern Niger are often presented as having identity or political motives, while socio-economic factors have seldom been taken into account. By contrast, the literature increasingly underlines their importance. This paper attempts to make a connection between the factors of the conflict in the north of Niger and the precariousness of the living standards of its populations. On the one hand, using qualitative information from the QUIBB 2005 survey, a descriptive analysis shows that the Agadez area suffers from the poorest accessibility to basic social services. On the other hand, an econometric investigation shows that the feeling about the living standards deterioration is stronger in this area. Our partial results seem therefore to provide an explanation to the rise of social and economic frustrations as well as to the origin of the conflicts recurrence in the Agadez area.
