Revue d'économie régionale et urbaine, 2016, vol. Juin, issue 3, 587-618

Abstract: This study investigates the benefits provided by cross-analysing urban sprawl and scattered development for understanding today's patterns of urban growth. Theories of urban sprawl and scattered development were reviewed in order to enlighten how these theories complement each other. On this basis, an empirical analysis was developed for characterizing trends in peri-urban areas, in the French region of Limousin. Indicators of functions and patterns of scattered development, that occurred in peri-urban communes between 1950 et 2009, were developped by using spatio-temporal data on residential lots. The relative extent of both urban sprawl and scattered development processes, at work in housing location, was investigated in Limousin region, an essentially rural region.
