Abstract:
Research in outsourcing concentrates primarily on the determinants of make or buy, and more recently on the phenomenon of make and buy. Limited research, however, exists on the consequences strategic interactions between players in an industry on outsourcing activity. This paper adopts a behavioural approach to develop a business simulation of outsourcing in an industry. It explores the reciprocal effect of industry competition on outsourcing. It is shown that outsourcing by a firm influences the relative performance of other firms in an industry, and can be the start of a cascade of outsourcing activity, leading successively to resources closer to the organizational core being externalized
