Abstract:
In 2012, Agrium Inc., a Canadian-listed chemical company, was the target of one of its shareholders, the JANA Partner LLC hedge fund. This article proposes a clinical study detailing the steps taken by this activist hedge fund, as well as the resistance of the leaders assisted by their board of directors. Agrium Inc. is one of the few Canadian companies to have defended itself effectively. As the aggressiveness of hedge funds is increasingly controversial, this analysis shows how a company can respond to such an attack.
