Abstract: Following the financial crisis of 2008, cooperative banks attempt to strengthen their legitimacy with their members: a key stakeholder in their governance. Through an analysis of the websites of regional banks forming Banques Populaires network, this study identifies the various types of legitimacy used by these banks in their discourse to win back their members. This research contributes to strengthening the link between the theory of legitimacy and the stakeholder theory and to extend the studies on the governance of cooperative banks.
