Abstract:
The succession of financial crises in the banking sector over the last thirty years has led to a demand for improvement in the governance principles of these organizations. The aim of this article is to examine and compare the role of performance and governance in the financial distress of commercial banks and cooperative banks of the European Union over the period 2005-2011. The empirical study indicates that governance has played a role in the financial distress experienced by some commercial banks when this link is not established for cooperative banks. The financial distress situation of cooperative banks originated from poor performance.
