Regard sur trente ans d’économie industrielle

Alain Balasse

Reflets et perspectives de la vie économique, 2003, vol. XLII, issue 4, 115-126

Abstract: This paper proposes to relate the origin and the evolution of industrial organization, a field of investigation devoted to the study of the productive activity, its components and its actors. The « new» industrial economics results from the reviewing of the notions of firm and competition, and from the adoption of the structuralist hypothesis and then of the trilogy « structure-conduct-performance». Nowadays, it attributes a leading part to firm strategies. New concepts (contracts theory, transaction costs, contestable markets) and inescapable methodological repositioning (among which the adoption of a pluri-disciplinary approach) contribute to the building of a more precise, present-day analysis of market regulations and industrial strategic behaviors.
