Abstract:
? The aim of this contribution is to develop a method for calculating child support in the Belgian context. Our method is based on an estimation of the cost of the child. We use the 2016 Household Budget Survey to estimate the ?overall cost? and ?specific costs? of the child. The results of the estimate showed that the theoretical cost of the child decreases between ]0-2.5 years] and ]2.5-6 years] and increases from 6 years to 25 years. Regarding the specific costs of the child, our results show that the items having the most weight in the cost of the child are those relating to ?clothing and personal effects? (34%), ?food and body care? (26%), ?culture, leisure and education? (16%) and ?transport and communication? (12%).
