Abstract: More than 1.7 million Egyptians have participated in labour protests since 2004 through strikes, sit-ins and other forms of protest. Focusing on the organisation of workers? strikes since 1952, this article analyses the political and economic context in which protests take place and its impact at the local level. Based on an ethnographic study conducted in two textile companies from the Nile Delta region ? Misr li-l-ghazl wa al-nasij in Mahalla al-Kubra and Indorama in Shibin al-Kawm ? I focus on the profile of strike leaders, social networks and organisations that enable mobilisation to take place and voice workers? grievances.
