Prendere lucciole per lanterne? I test di ammissione all'Università come strumento di selezione degli studenti

Stefano Staffolani

Economia & lavoro, 2013, issue 1, 87-98

Abstract: This paper analyses the efficiency of theentrance tests in comparison with other formsof selection for admission to the University. It isbased on the data assembled by the EconomicsFaculty of the Polytechnic University of theMarche, where all the students are subjected toa non-selective entrance test and where data areavailable on performance in the first year of study. The results of the empirical analyses show that inpractice the entrance test alone yields no additionalinformation to that offered by the school leavingcertificate marks and type. The most efficient wayto select students (especially in terms of reducingthe expected drop-out rate) is based on the generaleducational attainment, possibly corroboratedwith performance of a test.
