Abstract:
This paper provides an overview of important tourism trends, in particular, trends in the motivations and interests of cultural tourists. Cultural Tourism is one of the most important and rapidly expanding economic and social phenomena of the contemporary world. Recently WTO identified a shift in tourism behavior towards culture and a more sophisticated tourist. Also, UNESCO recognizes the strong links between tourism, culture and development. A truly authentic tourist experience is steeped in culture and history and it needs a focused attention. In this context the paper investigates if the new “attention economy” and the “experience economy” approaches are suitable in rethinking cultural tourism.
