Abstract: This work aims to analyze the influence of certain macroeconomic factors, mainly, employment and economic growth, on the evolution of social economy, measured through the labour - managed firms. To carry out this task, different econometric exercises are carried out using a panel of data made up by the 17 Spanish autonomous communities (Ceuta and Melilla are not included). Time dimension, conditioned by the availability of the statistical sources used spans the period 1986-1995, therefore this whole empiric work is carried out on the base of a 10x17 panel. The results show a significance in the anticyclical relationship of employment with labour - managed firms that shows the defensive character of these companies in the face of economic crises.
