Abstract: This article presents the results of research into the cooperative movement in Ecuador. After analysing the historical background, it describes the development and current situation of the movement, and discusses its weaknesses and future prospects. It also examines the role of the State in its origins and evolution, as well as looking at the chief limiting factors of the current legal system. Lastly, it presents some statistical data to help clarify the function of the cooperative movement and its importance in Ecuador.
