Abstract: The passing of former premier Peter Lougheed provided an occasion to remember not just his fierce defense of Alberta against the predatory policies of then prime minister Pierre Trudeau, but the substance of that defense: strong provincial rights based on the constitutional principle of equality of the provinces.
