Abstract:
This paper looks at the number and value of Mergers and acquisitions that took place in the European Union financial industry in the 1990–2011 period. The process of mergers and acquisitions is the main method used by financial institution to grow and to obtain better performance. In the same time, mergers and acquisition, helped by the european legislation, increased in number lately, due to the advantages obtained by banks when involving in a process like this. The increasing interest of foreign investors for mergers and acquisitions conducts to a concentration in the banking sector. The consequence of this process is the appearance and development of financial groups.
