Lean Manufacturing measurement: The relationships between Lean activities and Lean metrics

Diego Fernando Manotas Duque () and Leonardo Rivera Cadavid ()

Estudios Gerenciales, 2008

Abstract: Lean Manufacturing was developedby Toyota Motor company to addresstheir specific needs in a restrictedmarket in times of economic trouble. These concepts have been studiedand proven to be transferrable andapplicable to a wide variety of industries. This paper aims to integratea set of metrics that have been proposedby different authors in such away that they are consistent with thedifferent stages and elements of LeanManufacturing implementations. To achieve this, two frameworks forLean implementations are presentedand then the main factors for successare used as the basis to proposemetrics that measure the advancein these factors. A tabular display ofthe impact of Lean activities" on themetrics is presented, proposing thatmany a priori assumptions about thebenefits on many different levels ofimprovement should be accurate. Finally, some ideas for future researchand extension of the applicationsproposed on this paper are presentedas closing points."
