Abstract:
This paper aims to analyze the labor informality in the Colombian rural sector and find the best definition to achieve an accurate measurement. To have levels of comparison with rural informality, informality is investigated in other regions of the world, as well as the national total. The results show that, although the levels of total and rural informality have declined mainly due to the 2012 tax reform, 85% of the rural population is informal, a very high level compared to low-income regions such as Central Africa or South Asia. The research presents the structural and institutional causes that have generated these low levels.
