Abstract: This paper discusses, from the perspective of Social Systems of Innovation and Production - SSIP - Colombian economic growth between 1950-2010, a period which is divided into the periods 1950-1990 and 1990-2010. Research shows that long-term growth is the result of the characteristics, interactions and complementarities that exist between the subsystems in the economy. Between 1950 and 1990, the subsystems in the Colombian economy not always interacted or did so weakly, implying that they do not always complement or complement weakly, explaining the average growth of 5% observed in the economy this period. Since late 1980, the country introduced a set of reforms that marked a turning point in the management of the economy changed the characteristics, interactions and complementarities that exist between the subsystems, which meant a change of the production model. However, given the turn the economy invigorated interactions and complementarities between the subsystems. For this second period, the average economic growth was 3.6%. Research shows that economic growth is not a problem of the economic model is adopted, but the characteristics, interactions and assembly of complementarities that may arise between the various subsystems that compose it.
