Abstract:
This article aims to review the production and economic growth estimates made for Colombia throughout the First Globalization (1870–1918). This review consists of two components: an analysis of the methods and assumptions applied by different approaches, and a historical and quantitative validation of the national production estimate proposed by Salvador Camacho Roldán. It is found that this last measure is consistent with the series estimated by De Corso (2019) since 1888, based on the expenditure approach. This consistency indicates that both series incorporate self-consumption, an important component of the agricultural production structure at the time. These two economic production estimates suggest that per capita economic growth during the period may be lower than traditionally estimated, due mainly to the behavior observed during the First World War.
