Determinantes de la fecundidad adolescente en el departamento del Atlántico, 2005

Abstract: Los embarazos adolescentes mostraron una tendencia creciente en el departamento del Atlántico en el periodo 1990-2005, y se refleja una disminución de la edad de inicio de la actividad sexual. La maternidad adolescente no puede sólo definirse en términos de una insuficiente oferta de métodos anticonceptivos, sino también como una respuesta al contexto dentro del cual se desarrolla la joven; variables tales como la presencia de violencia en el hogar, la asistencia a la escuela y el índice de riqueza resultan ser más importantes que el uso de métodos anticonceptivos. En el departamento del Atlántico se presenta una realidad preocupante; una gran proporción de las madres adolescentes han quedado en embarazo luego de finalizar sus estudios secundarios, lo cual demuestra que la escuela no está actuando como un mitigador de un problema sino como un ente que retarda su aparición. Además, las madres adolescentes del departamento se sitúan en los niveles más bajos de riqueza cuando se compara con otros departamentos. Los cálculos fueron realizados con base en las Encuestas de Demografía y Salud. ****** Teenagers’ pregnancies showed an increasing tendency in the Atlántico State during the 1990-2005 period and reflects a decrease in the age of initiation of sexual activities. Adolescent maternity can not only be defined in terms of an insufficient offer of contraceptive methods, but also as a response to the context where the youngster develops; variables such as intrafamily violence, school assistance and wealth index show to be more important than the use of contraceptive methods. A worrying reality appears in the Atlántico State: a great proportion of adolescent mothers have got pregnant after finishing their high school studies. This shows that the school is not acting as an entity mitigating a problem, but as an agency retarding its emergence. Also, the adolescent mothers of the Atlántico State are at lower levels of Wealth Index than the mothers of other departments. The estimations were made with the Demographic Health Surveys.
