No 1994019, LIDAM Discussion Papers IRES from Université catholique de Louvain, Institut de Recherches Economiques et Sociales (IRES)

Abstract: This paper identifies the countries with low hourly wages in industry, and the proportion of world GDP produced by these countries. Next, it determines the relative importance of imports from low wage countries and examines the extent to which Community exports to the LWCs follow trends which resemble or differ from the trends for imports. The aggregated approach then gives way to an examination of sectors at 2-digit and 3-digit levels wich in particular shows the presence of intrabranch type trade. Finally, an econometric exercises is designed to identify certain factors likely to promote or to inhibit imports from the LWCs to the European Union. These factors are not very mobile and can be influenced by Community policies the aim of wich is to encourage the establishment of activities within the European market.
