Relevance of the secondary level curriculum in the training of young people and adults

Abstract: This study analyzes the relevance of the secondary education curriculum for adult education in the urban area of ​​the municipality of Cotuí, Dominican Republic. Within the framework of Latin American educational reforms oriented toward lifelong learning, the Dominican curriculum has sought to integrate labor and social competencies that respond to a globalized and productively active environment. The objective of the research was to determine the correspondence between the competencies promoted by the curriculum and the socio-labor demands of the region. The methodological approach was quantitative, with a non-experimental, and descriptive design. Surveys were administered to a sample of 162 participants (students, teachers, and employers), and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results show a high level of labor insertion among adult students, as well as a positive assessment of transversal competencies such as functional literacy, teamwork, and values. However, limitations are identified in the connection between the educational offerings and the demands of the productive environment. It is concluded that the curriculum is generally relevant, but requires adjustments to strengthen employability, technical training, and the civic dimension, especially through greater coordination with the Technical-Professional Modality and with local development stakeholders.
