Multidimensional Strategies to Promote and Sustain Exclusive Breastfeeding in Clinical Practice

Abstract: To analyze the key factors in the management of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) in the clinical practice of a public hospital. Materials and Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. The sample included 250 mothers and their newborns attending the maternity and pediatric services. A structured questionnaire was applied to collect information on sociodemographic characteristics, breastfeeding practices, maternal knowledge and perceptions, as well as the support received from healthcare personnel. Clinical records were also reviewed. Descriptive and association analyses were performed. Results: 92.4% of the mothers-initiated breastfeeding within the first hour of life, but only 55.6% maintained EBF up to 6 months. The main reasons for interrupting EBF were the perception of insufficient milk production (41.3%), return to work (29.6%), and difficulties with the breastfeeding technique (23.4%).
