Absence of gender identity education in the training of psychosocial therapists: A qualitative analysis

Abstract: Training in gender identity within mental health education continues to be a pending subject in many academic institutions. The purpose of this study is to analyze the absence of training in gender identity in the Psychosocial Therapy curriculum and its implications for the professional preparation of students. Using a qualitative approach and a phenomenological design, in-depth interviews were conducted with students of the sixth semester of the “Padre Isaías Ojeda” College of Hogares CREA (CUPIO). The results reveal that the participants have not received formal education on gender identity, which generates insecurity in their professional practice and limits their ability to intervene with transgender people. It is concluded that it is essential to reform the study plans, incorporating specific modules on gender diversity, in order to guarantee comprehensive training and a more ethical and inclusive therapeutic practice.
