Resistance and redefinition of identity: Strategies of sex/gender diverse women in conservative contexts

Abstract: In Sopetrán and Santa Fe de Antioquia, gender-diverse women construct their identity in an environment marked by heteronormative norms that condition their social recognition. This study explores these women's experiences in affirming their identity in conservative contexts. The objective is to understand the social representations that influence their identity. A qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews with 12 lesbian, bisexual, and trans women was used. The results reveal that they face discrimination in the family, education, and employment, which limits their opportunities. However, they have developed resistance strategies such as support networks and redefining their identity. It is concluded that, although exclusion persists, these women challenge imposed norms and generate spaces for validation. It is urgent to implement public policies that guarantee their inclusion and rights in conservative communities.
