Origins and cultural relevance of beans with Dulce in the Dominican Republic: a qualitative study

Madelin Martínez-Bonifacio

Revista Multidisciplinaria Voces de América y el Caribe, 2025, vol. 2, 139-155

Abstract: This study examined the origin and cultural relevance of "habichuelas con dulce" (sweet beans) in three regions of the Dominican Republic (north, south, and east). A qualitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional design was applied, using semi-structured interviews and documentary review. Findings indicate that the dessert is considered highly significant across regions, mainly associated with Holy Week, with minor variations in ingredients and preparation. Several theories about its origin were identified, highlighting French, African, Turkish, and Canary Islands influences. Further studies with larger samples and international comparisons are recommended to deepen cultural analysis
