Occupational risk in surgery and other minimally invasive procedures

Abstract:
Introduction: The rapid advancement of surgical techniques in recent decades has led to the introduction of minimally invasive surgery and other procedures. These technologies offer benefits for the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases; however, they also possess distinctive elements that increase the risk of accidents and work-related illnesses. Objective: To describe the main occupational risks associated with surgery and other minimally invasive procedures related to occupational diseases. Methods: A literature review was conducted using the SciELO Regional, LILACS, EBSCO, and HINARI databases. Fourteen references were selected, allowing for the identification of the main occupational risks related to minimally invasive procedures. Results: In minimally invasive surgery and other minimally invasive procedures, elements such as pneumoperitoneum, surgical smoke, and the opening of trocar valves contribute to the development of respiratory illnesses. Similarly, the handling of laparoscopic instruments, surgical times, and the combination of techniques in the same patient increase the risk of accidents among healthcare personnel. Conclusions: Surgery and other minimally invasive procedures represent an advance in modern medicine; however, understanding the occupational risks associated with these technologies is essential for the prevention of occupational diseases.
