Abstract:
Digital entrepreneurship in India has grown rapidly over the last decade, driven by rising internet access, affordable smartphones, wide adoption of digital payments, supportive government policies and a thriving startup ecosystem. This paper examines the opportunities and challenges facing digital entrepreneurs in India, drawing on secondary data (industry reports, government releases, and market statistics) and three case studies that illustrate how business models, payments infrastructure, and social-commerce enablement have shaped venture creation. Opportunities include a vast and growing consumer market, low-cost distribution via platforms, rich payments infrastructure (UPI), and government support (Digital India, Startup India). Challenges include the persistent digital divide (urban–rural and gender gaps), cybersecurity and fraud, logistics and last-mile costs, limited access to early-stage capital outside metros, regulatory complexity, and skill shortages. The paper closes with policy and managerial recommendations to strengthen inclusive digital entrepreneurship.
