Abstract:
The valorization of waste is an approach aimed at transforming waste into valuable resources, thereby reducing environmental impacts. The National Strategy for Integrated Waste Management by 2035 aims to promote this practice in Algeria. However, obstacles such as the inefficiency of the waste market hinder its success. Through a conceptual revision of the Hotelling theorem adjusted to the framework of the oligopsonistic market, our analysis allowed us to anticipate the behaviors of waste evaluation centers as buying actors. Our study simulated the performance of the household waste valorization sector in Algeria, showing that imperfect competition leads to higher costs, reduced productivity, and devaluation of the sector. To achieve its full potential, intervention by public authorities is necessary.
