Conceptual and structural aspects of the development of domestic banking (second half of the 19th century to the early 21st century)

Abstract: Background. As a natural regulator of the economy, the banking system and its activities channel, regulate, accumulate, and collect funds, as well as control their circulation and act as an intermediary in banking transactions between individuals, organizations, and states. The relevance of this research topic lies in the fact that an analysis of the evolution of banking is important for understanding both the challenges and prospects for the development of the banking system in the Russian Federation today. Purpose – disclosure of the conceptual and structural aspects of the development of domestic banking in the period under review. Materials and methods. In studying the topic, the following were used: 1) universal scientific methods; 2) general scientific methods; 3) special, and in this case historical, methods; 4) applied methods of historical research. Results. It has been established that the structure of the banking system of the Russian Federation currently corresponds to market economic conditions. In 2001 and 2002, the Laws of the Russian Federation «On Banks and Banking Activities» and the Civil Code of the Russian Federation were adopted, establishing the legal status of credit and monetary and banking organizations, their rights, obligations, powers and principles of activity. The history of the development of banking in the Russian Federation is presented in 6 stages of development: 1st − from the middle of the 18th century to 1860; 2nd − from 1860 to 1917; 3rd − 1917 to 1930; 4th − from 1932 to 1987; 5th − from 1988 to 2000; 6th − from 2001 to the present.
