Abstract: Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face numerous challenges which need to be solved by means of action patterns. In this context, the spatial context also plays an important role. SMEs, especially those located in rural areas, face further challenges that need to be tackled by the management: The central pattern of action here is collaboration with stakeholders in order to contribute to competitiveness and innovation. This topic will be described in more detail in this article with a focus on the importance of collaboration, cooperation partners, success factors, barriers and challenges. The article concludes with four theses on „collaboration fitness“.
