Comprehensive Management of Medical Emergencies in Dental Practice

Vazquez, Brusca, Garzón and Ferreira

Health Leadership and Quality of Life, 2023, vol. 2, 153

Abstract: Medical emergencies in the dental setting represented a significant challenge for health professionals, who faced unexpected situations such as syncope, hyperventilation, asthma, epilepsy, anaphylactic shock, airway obstruction, metabolic disturbances and cardiorespiratory arrest. These conditions arose from natural causes, diseases or a combination of both, requiring appropriate and timely management to ensure patient stability and avoid legal complications. Effective management required theoretical knowledge, practical skills and the availability of specific equipment and drugs in the clinic. In addition, the importance of rapid assessment and the implementation of protocols based on up-to-date guidelines was emphasised. Continuing education and training were key to responding to critical events and stabilising the patient while coordinating specialised medical care. Psychological factors such as fear and anxiety also played an important role, as they frequently triggered episodes such as syncope and hyperventilation. Therefore, dentists developed competencies in communication and empathy to handle these situations effectively. In summary, comprehensive preparation and up-to-date knowledge were essential to preserve patient health and maintain high quality standards in dental care.
