Health and Wellness in Nursing Care: The Importance of Medical Check-Ups

Abstract: Introduction: The nursing care team faces physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic and psychosocial occupational hazards, which can lead to occupational diseases and accidents. Periodic medical check-ups are essential to detect conditions early and guarantee the health of the staff, favoring continuity of care and reducing absenteeism. However, previous studies have shown low adherence to these check-ups, which underlines the importance of implementing strategies to promote their performance. Development: The article analyzed the different types of medical check-ups recommended for the nursing team, which include clinical evaluations, laboratory tests, cardiological, gynecological or prostate studies, and mental health examinations. These check-ups seek to detect diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and psychological disorders at an early stage. Factors that hinder adherence, such as work overload, the perception of good health and lack of time, were also discussed. The importance of institutional strategies, such as flexible schedules and continuing education programs, to improve access to these checkups was highlighted. Periodic medical check-ups represent an indispensable tool for the prevention of occupational diseases in the nursing care team. Their implementation contributes to the physical and psychological well-being of these professionals, to the improvement of working conditions and to the assurance of quality patient care. Adherence to these practices should be encouraged through institutional policies that prioritize the health and safety of personnel, guaranteeing their sustainability over time
