ESPECIALIZACIÓN, DIVERSIFICACIÓN Y LOCALIZACIÓN SECTORIAL EN ECUADOR Y SU INCIDENCIA EN EL INGRESO REGIONAL

Abstract: El objetivo de esta investigación es evaluar la incidencia de la especialización, diversificación y localización sectorial en el ingreso regional en Ecuador. Calculamos un índice de especialización, diversificación y localización sectorial y luego evaluamos el efecto de éstos índices en el ingreso per cápita regional. Los resultados muestran que las regiones especializadas en el sector agrícola son las menos desarrolladas y las especializadas en la manufactura y los servicios tienen mayor desarrollo. Una implicación de política derivada de esta investigación es que la especialización en el sector manufacturero y servicios son clave para favorecer el desarrollo de las regiones periféricas.

The objective of this research is to evaluate the incidence of specialization, diversification and sectoral localization in the regional income in Ecuador. We calculate an index of specialization, diversification and sectoral location and then evaluate the effect of these indices on the regional per capita income. The results show that the specialized regions in the agricultural sector are the least developed and those specialized in manufacturing and services have greater development. A policy implication derived from this research is that specialization in the manufacturing sector and services are key to favor the development of the peripheral regions.
