NEXO CAUSAL ENTRE LA URBANIZACIÓN Y LA PRODUCCIÓN REGIONAL: EVIDENCIA PARA ECUADOR USANDO VI EN ECONOMETRÍA ESPACIAL

Abstract: El objetivo de esta investigación es examinar empíricamente la incidencia de la tasa de urbanización sobre la producción per cápita regional en Ecuador. Con el fin de corregir el sesgo de la endogeneidad y la omisión de la dependencia espacial, utilizamos el método de variables instrumentales en econometría espacial. A partir del enfoque teórico de Krugman (1991) y Henderson (1997), encontramos que la tasa de urbanización tiene una fuerte relación positiva con la producción per cápita regional. La producción regional depende de la producción de las regiones vecinas. Una posible implicación de política derivada de la presente investigación es que la inversión pública debe fomentar la especialización productiva a partir de las dotaciones de cada región para acelerar el desarrollo.

The objective of this research is to empirically examine the incidence of the urbanization rate on regional per capita production in Ecuador. In order to correct the bias of endogeneity and the omission of spatial dependence, we used the method of instrumental variables in spatial econometrics. Based on the theoretical approach of Krugman (1991) and Henderson (1997), we find that the rate of urbanization has a strong positive relationship with regional per capita production. The regional production depends on the production of the neighboring regions. One possible policy implication derived from this research is that public investment should encourage productive specialization based on the endowments of each region to accelerate development.
