Regional and Sectoral Economic Studies, 2020, vol. 20, issue 2, 109-120

To have a better understanding of the relationship between female labour-force participation and fertility rate is key to define and economic policies for creating a more equal and sustainable labour market. For this reason, in this paper we analyse the causality relationship between fertility rate and female labour-force participation rate in Colombia (for 23 departments and Bogotá Capital District) using the Granger’s causality test for the period 2001-2018. The results reflect the regional cultural heterogeneity in Colombia by not finding a clear pattern on the existence and the direction of the Granger causality. In general, there is no Granger causal relationship in either direction for 50% of the analysed territories, suggesting that common exogenous factors may affect the evolution of both variables.
